Theft of jewelry from London homes increases in '09: police
"Initially the break and enters were occurring predominately in the north end of the city and in the west end of the city between the hours of 8 a.m., and 5 p.m.," police said. So far this year there have been 33 break-and-enter reports involving only jewelry being stolen and many of these break and enters involved home owners leaving the property unsecured. Police said they have obtained a description of a possible suspect: a white male, 45 to 50 years of age, 5'10" to 6' tall, and 170 lbs. "It's imperative that citizens report strangers who attend their residence and ask for fictitious persons and do not have a reason to be there," police said, adding citizens should contact police immediately if they see any suspicious persons or behavior on or around their property or other property. Anyone with information regarding break and enters involving jewelry and regarding any suspects are asked to call London police at 519-661-5670 or contact Crime Stoppers online (see link at bottom of page) or call 1-800-222-TIPS. Crime Prevention Tips Lock your doors and windows. Preventative measures for protecting your jewelry include properly securing jewelry in the home or securing jewelry in a safety security box. Ways to assist in reporting your items stolen Take photos of your jewelry, record serial numbers that are on jewelry and keep jewelry appraisals readily available. Recording serial numbers is also important in reporting other property stolen and assists in the potential recovery of that property in the future. Most property items do have serial numbers but some do not. By marking your property and making your property identifiable, this will also assist in the recovery of property. Whether you are leaving your residence to go to work for the day or on a vacation, take the following precautions Lock your doors and windows, many residences broken into are through unlocked doors and windows. On vacation: Stop delivery of your newspaper and have flyers and regular mail picked up. Leave your shades and blinds in their normal position - drawn shades and blinds can be a giveaway that you are away on vacation. Use plug in timers to cycle interior lights on and off at various times of the night. Leave your normal message on your answering machine - don't announce that you are away on vacation. Have a trusted neighbour park their car in your driveway to make your home looked "lived-in." Consider securing valuable small items (jewelry, keepsakes, etc.) in a safety deposit box rather than leaving them at home while you are away. WEB: London Crime Stoppers |
| I was a victim of a break in, but my place was locked up tight. They needed tools to get in. When I gave the "police" the name of the person who did it, mother's name and address/grandmother/uncles name and address and name of their little gang the "police" had nothing to go on. Fine police work there Lou. |
