More than 150 business leaders representing many multinational corporations were on hand for the launch of National Biotechnology Week at the London Convention Centre, Friday (Sept. 18).
National Biotechnology Week runs from Friday to Sept. 25, and recognizes Canada's
bio-based economy, which contributes $78.3 billion to Canada's GDP and employs more than 1 million Canadians, making it larger than the auto or aerospace
sectors.
The launch attracted many multinational corporations including Pfizer, Amgen
and Schering-Plough. The opening breakfast featured talks by Ontario's Minister of Research and Innovation John Milloy, and
the Founding Editor and CEO of Seed Media, Adam Bly .
In his remarks, Milloy discussed his commitment to grow the bio-tech industry
in Ontario with respect to the recently announced Innovation Agenda which commits $3.2-billion to promoting technology development in the province.
BIOTECanada presented new data to Milloy, collected by Nanos Research, which demonstrated that 58 per cent of Ontarians consider biotechnology as very important to Canada's future economic prosperity, and 77 percent are concerned about our country's global competitiveness in science and technology.
Bly, the key note speaker of the launch, addressed the group by encouraging leaders in biotechnology to continue to effectively communicating the importance of science and
technology to the public both at a national and global level.
"Those of you in the lab, those of you who employ scientists, know that the contributions of science are in the essential truth that it seeks," Bly said.
