Ever been the victim of electronic bullying? Has someone ever posted false information or an altered photograph of you on Facebook? What if bullies had to stand trial for their inappropriate behavior?
These are some of the questions posed in a series of dramatic productions being
staged at high schools throughout Thames Valley aimed at engaging students in
discussion about preventing violence, resolving conflicts and developing empathy for
others.
The theatrical events are part of Thames Valley District School Board's Safe Schools
initiative aimed at fostering safe learning environments for students, staff and the
community.
Two of the plays to be performed locally were written by Saunders Secondary school drama teacher, Deighton Thomas.
The Trial, takes place in a court room where two students are on trial for their
inappropriate behavior played out through flashback memories of students who
were victimized. Thomas' other play, Reaction, focuses on electronic bullying.
Drama students from Saunders, Westminster, Medway and Central Elgin secondary
schools will perform the plays followed by facilitated discussions for Grade 7-12
students across Thames Valley.
A third dramatic production, the interactive play A Day in the Life will be presented
at several district high schools.
After watching the play, which involves homophobia and relational aggression, the story is staged a second time but this time the audience can stop the play and choose different methods of resolving the conflict.
In addition to live theatre, the original film Good Intentions?? will be screened for
Grade 11 students at 11 high schools across Thames Valley. The movie, produced by
TVDSB, is the story of a young woman who was the victim of dating violence and is
aimed at encouraging discussion of ways to prevent violence and promote healthy
methods of conflict resolution.
