H1N1 UPDATE: Health Unit schedules more high-priority-only clinics; sets up Twitter account

The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced Tuesday (Nov. 3) that it will hold four additional Pandemic (H1N1) influenza vaccination clinics for high-risk individuals Wednesday (Nov. 4).

In addition, health officials want to let the public know they can now follow the MLHU online information on the social networking site, Twitter.

"As demonstrated by the number of people who attended our clinics yesterday, we know demand for the H1N1 vaccine remains high," says Dr. Graham Pollett, MLHU Medical Officer of Health. "We are working to achieve the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care's stated goal of using the vaccine we have on hand as quickly as possible, while ensuring those at highest risk get vaccinated."

The four clinics will take place Wednesday, from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the following locations:

• Glen Cairn Public School, 53 Frontenac Road, London
• St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, 1360 Oxford Street West, London
• Western Fair Special Events Building
• Lucan Memorial Community Centre, 263 Main Street, Lucan

The high risk H1N1 influenza vaccination clinics listed above are only open to:

• Individuals under the age of 65 who:
- have underlying medical conditions;
- are household members of children under the age of six (6) months;
- are household members of individuals with problems with their immune systems (examples: cancer treatment, HIV/AIDS, transplant patients, kidney dialysis, taking long term steroids and some other drugs);
• Children between six months and less than five years of age;
• Pregnant women with underlying medical conditions or healthy women over 20 weeks of pregnancy and;
• Health care workers.

In addition, starting at Wednesday's clinics, the unadjuvanted vaccine will be available for pregnant women.

Health officials also announced that the public can now follow the MLHU Pandemic (H1N1) updates online at Twitter (see link).

"It is expected that further clinic times and locations will be announced later this week," MLHU officials said.
