A coordinated truck inspection blitz carried out Thursday (Nov. 5) netted police one truck driver who should not have been driving at all, and saw 20 charges laid against either the drivers or the companies of several commercial vehicles.
The blitz was a joint operation by London police, OPP and MTO officials, carried out in London's northeast, and one driver, among the 35 truck inspections carried out, walked away no truck and multiple charges.
During the blitz, an officer stopped a cube van and directed the driver to pull into the inspections lanes. Officers quickly determined that the validation tags on the truck were expired and the license plates did not belong on the truck.
"The driver identified himself with an expired drivers licence and
it was determined that he was using this 'old' licence in hopes of
covering up the fact that he was a suspended driver," said Sgt. Tom O'Brien, London police Traffic Management Unit.
In addition, police discovered that the 31-year-old driver was currently on a seven-day license suspension flowing over the legal limit at a blood/alcohol roadside breath test a few days earlier.
"This means he's had a three-day suspension as well since May
1st - new law," O'Brien noted, adding the driver admitted that he didn't have any insurance on the vehicle.
"This guy just isn't getting it! So now he's getting it! He's charged
with drive while under suspension, drive no insurance, drive motor
vehicle improper plates and fail to notify ministry on becoming owner of
a motor vehicle," O'Brien said.
During the day long initiative, 35 commercial truck inspections
were conducted and six of these trucks were placed out of service for
various infractions, including defective brakes, steering, lighting and tires.
In total, 20 charges were laid against the drivers or the companies, police said.
