The London police will be better equipped from here on out thanks to a grant from Ontario's Attorney General's Civil Remedies Grant Program to the tune of $250,000.

The announcement was made Friday (Nov. 6) during a press conference at London Police Headquarters, attended by police Chief Murray Faulkner and Ontario's Attorney General Chris Bentley, MPP London West.

With the grant, the London Police Service will acquire a new mobile command vehicle which will allow the Community Oriented Response Unit to respond to, and coordinate, investigations of large scale emergencies and more effectively assist in the search for missing persons throughout the community.

"Thanks to this grant, the Civil Remedies Act has provided us with a very important community policing tool. This new community command vehicle will allow the London Police Service to better serve our community and make London a safer place for all residents," said Faulkner.

The vehicle will act as a satellite police facility that can travel to incidents throughout the London area. Instead of having to go back to the station, police officers will be able to review evidence, hold confidential meetings, write reports and give direction from a centralized location.

"This vehicle will allow police to fight crime and respond quickly and effectively to incidents across the London region. The London Police Service works hard to protect our community and should be commended for identifying a need in the community and submitting a strong proposal to make it possible," Bentley said.

The grant program, created under the Civil Remedies Act, allows criminal proceeds to be used to support the prevention of unlawful activity and victimization. Since November of 2003, $11.2 million in property has been forfeited to the Crown under provincial civil forfeiture law. An additional $40 million in property is frozen pending the completion of civil forfeiture proceedings.

Civil forfeiture proceeds have funded approximately $1.2 million in compensation to direct victims of unlawful activity and $3.4 million in grants to law enforcement agencies.

Seriously? Is this new toy really necessary in little London? I hope they start writing many "Distracted Driving" tickets to help pay for this snazzy RV. And to think, my workplace even cut drinking water due to the recession.
