Jewelry thief brandishes screw driver to avoid apprehension

A suspected jewelry thief didn't get very far despite brandishing a screw driver in an attempt to avoid apprehension, after merchandise was stolen from a store inside Masonville Mall, Wednesday (Dec. 16).
The suspect, who police say snagged the jewelry just before 1:30 p.m., was followed outside by store staff to a waiting car. When store employees confronted the suspect about the stolen jewelry, he brandished a screw driver.
"The male was contained at the scene by staff with the assistance of nearby citizens," police said.
Officers arrived on the scene and arrested the male suspect and the female driver of the waiting car. No one was injured during the incident, police said.
Carl Smith, 48, of London, is charged with one count of theft over
$5,000 and one count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace.
Julie Clarke, 39, of London, is charged with one count of possession
of marijuana and one count of possession of Temazepam for the purpose of trafficking.
