Have you ever wondered how far a snake would slide on the snow if you threw one?
Not a real snake but a "prepared snowsnake." That's what's on the agenda come March when the Museum of Ontario Archaeology in London hosts the 2010 Snowsnake Tournament and Winter Festival.
It's a tournament that's more than 500 years old and the two-day event will feature competitive snowsnake teams as they throw a specially prepared "snow-snake" down a snow track in this challenging First Nations' sport played.
The event takes place March 6-7 (Saturday-Sunday), 10 a.m. 4:30 p.m., daily, at the museum, 1600 Attawandaron Rd., off of Wonderland Rd., N. Admission is by donation.
The snakes, which are six feet long and have been known to slide for up 2.4 km, are 1.8 m in length.
The track on which they travel is made by piling snow about 76 cm high and sloping it to ground level. A log is used to make a groove along the top of the track for the snowsnakes to travel
Even spectators can get in on the action and try tossing a snowsnake themselves.
Included among the other activities are snowshoeing in the outdoor Iroquoian village, dog sled rides and demonstrations, Three Sisters Soup tasting in the longhouse, and children's games and crafts.
The event will also feature temporary art exhibitions by aboriginal artists Ken Rollinson and Frank Northgrave. First Nations artists will be on-site demonstrating their various art forms.
