He's thrilled Knights fans all season. He's made big-time saves when they matter big time.

London Knights goalie Steve Mason has made perhaps the biggest snag of the season so far by grabbing up the Ontario Hockey League's 2006-2007 Goaltender of the Year award.

Mason was selected by OHL coaches and general managers as the league's most outstanding goaltender, the OHL announced today (April 12).

While the award could be seen as a high-water mark on a spectacular season, it was preceded by a number of accomplishments along the way.

Mason posted an impressive 45-13-1-3 record, along with a 3.20 goals against average and a .914 save percentage, in 62 games this season.

He was instrumental in leading the Knights to their fourth-consecutive Hamilton Spectator Trophy, along with the teams fourth-consecutive Holody Trophy Midwest Division Championship.

Mason's 45 regular season wins is a new OHL record amongst goaltenders.

An 18-year-old native of Oakville Ontario, Mason is a 2006 third-round draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was named the OHL Goalie of the Month for November, and was also recognized as the OHL Player of the Week and the ADT CHL Goalie of the Week, for the week ending March 27.

Mason was selected by opposing squads as teams were not permitted to vote for a goaltender from their own hockey club.

Goaltenders received five points for a first place vote, three points for a second place vote and one point for a third place vote.

In total, Mason received 76 points in the voting process, followed by runner-up Michal Neuvirth, of the Plymouth Whalers, who received 43 points, and Thomas McCollum, of the Guelph Storm, who finished third in the voting with 28 points.

By receiving this award, Mason joins some elite company: past winners including Adam Dennis, Ray Emery, Andrew Raycroft and Manny Legace.

Mason will now serve as the OHL nominee for the ADT CHL Goaltender of the Year.
