Though the jolly old elf generally flies direct routes to his destinations, when Santa Claus takes part in London's Santa Claus parade Saturday (Nov. 24), he'll be taking a detour from the regular parade route thanks to the infamous London sinkhole.

The parade begins at Kellogg's at 6 p.m., and finishes at Ridout Street at around 7:30 p.m.

With numerous floats and bands, stretching a distance of 3.3 km, the parade will wind its way through downtown London, beginning at Kellogg's and traveling west down Dundas Street.

At Colborne Street, the parade will head north for one block to Queen's Avenue. It will travel west down Queen's Avenue until Ridout Street.

The sinkhole has meant a change in the normal route "so it is important that spectators know the route and get there early enough to avoid traffic congestion," said London police.

Parents are asked to keep control of their young charges to ensure that no one gets injured as the various floats and vehicles pass by.

All other motorists and pedestrians heading to the downtown area are asked to be patient with the requisite detours and road closures.
