Three authorities join forces to protect area drinking water
The Thames-Sydenham and Region Source Protection Committee was established under the Clean Water Act to guide the development of plans to protect municipal drinking water sources in watersheds of the St. Clair Region, Upper Thames River and Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authorities. Committee members were appointed by a striking committee with representatives from each of the respective conservation authority boards. The first meeting of the committee is scheduled for Dec. 14, 10 a.m., at the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority Office in Strathroy. This meeting will mark the beginning of a process that is expected to take about five years, including considerable public consultation. The chair of the committee is Bob Bedggood from Thamesford who was appointed in August by the Minister of the Environment. The members of the Source Protection Committee represent a broad range of sectors with an interest in source water protection: municipalities, agriculture, business, industry, First Nations and the public. There are seven members representing municipalities, seven representing economic sectors such as agriculture and industry, and seven representing public interests. In addition, there are three seats for First Nations representatives which have not been filled to date. For more information on the Source Protection Committee, visit online (see link).
