TD Bank Financial Group announced Thursday (Jan. 24) that it is donating $500,000 towards the completion of the Brent and Marilyn Kelman Centre for Advanced Learning at the London Health Sciences Centre.
But though the donation may be a local one, it has implications that reach out beyond the London region.
LHSC officials said the donation will help provide the best care for its patients while at the same time, innovating for the world.
Physicians from London, as well as from across Canada and around the world will train at the centre, learning the latest minimally-invasive techniques that, among other benefits, promote quicker surgical recovery times.
"We will be able to share techniques and procedures developed at CSTAR (Canadian Surgical Technologies and Advanced Robotics)," says Cliff Nordal, LHSC's president and CEO. "Like our Canadian first last May, when a cardiac surgery team led by Dr. Bob Kiaii performed a totally endoscopic, closed-chest, robotic, coronary-artery bypass surgery on a patient's beating heart."
The minimally-invasive nature of this new procedure means that a patient only requires a one-to-two-day stay in hospital and can recover and return to normal activity in about a week.
Upon completion, the centre will be located on level six of the Lindros Legacy Research building at London Health Sciences Centre's University Hospital, and will be a vital component of the world-class education programming at CSTAR, Canada's national centre for pioneering the next generation of minimally invasive surgical and interventional techniques including robotics.
"Fostering the health of Canadians through the education of medical professionals is something we believe is very important and an area where our donations can help make a difference," said Chuck Hounsell, Senior Vice President at TD Canada Trust Retail Banking. "Through our support of this new surgical learning centre, we hope to have a positive impact on the care that patients across the country will receive in the future."
Long-time Londoners Brent Kelman and his wife Marilyn provided the major donations towards the centre in 1997 and again in 2002. Brent is a long-standing board member and the current Chair of the Board for London Health Sciences Foundation.
"Personally, and on behalf of the London Health Sciences Foundation I would like to thank TD Bank Financial Group," said Brent Kelman. "TD has a first rate community giving program and we are grateful that they have chosen to support London Heath Sciences Centre with such a generous gift."
"This commitment by TD Bank Financial Group will help enhance an environment that fosters the sharing of leading edge surgical-training techniques," says Dr. John Denstedt, Chief of Surgery, LHSC.
Since 1996, TD Canada Trust has pledged over $1.9 million to the LHSC.
