For the third straight year the University of Western Ontario co-ed cheerleading team has captured the title at the largest cheerleading competition in the world.
No small feat when one considers nearly 900 teams, in various age and skill divisions, compete at the annual competition.
The three-peat victory at the CheerSport Nationals, held in Atlanta, GA., this past weekend, was one to relish for the Western squad, as the team fell short in its bid for the Canadian title in December of last year.
"It kind of helps get the monkey off our back from not winning the Canadian title back in December," said coach David-Lee Tracey.
Western competes in the Collegiate Level 6 Co-ed division. The University of Arkansas finished in second place.
"On day one, we ran an almost perfect run, just a few timing errors," said
Tracey. The second day, Western hung on to defeat Arkansas, despite a shaky pyramid formation.
A popular and highly competitive sport in the U.S., the average daily attendance at this year's CheerSport Nationals was 20,000 spectators. In addition, 19,000 competitors took part in the competition.
"I know that we crushed a couple of the other big-name teams (Florida
and NC State) when you do the cross-category comparison," Tracey said.
