A minor collision in downtown London Wednesday night (March 26) has led to a member of the London Knights coaching staff facing an impaired driving charge.

London police said David Gagner, 41, London Knights assistant coach and former NHL player, was one of two drivers involved in the accident and as a result of the police investigation, was arrested and charged with impaired driving.

The accident took place at the intersection of Dundas Street and Talbot Street when a northbound car rear-ended another northbound car at around 10:30 p.m. The driver of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries in the collision.

Police said Gagner had more then the legal limit of blood/alcohol concentration in his system.

"Given that this matter is before the courts, the London Knights organization is not able to comment further on the situation," said an official statement from the Knights.

Gagner is the third member of the Knights organization to face such a charge in recent years. Knights head coach Dale Hunter was also arrested and charged with impaired driving in 2006, but the case was dismissed after a judge ruled his Charter rights had been violated.

In 2004, Hunter nephew and former London Knight Logan Hunter was charged with impaired driving after the vehicle he was driving struck a street light on Sarnia Road. Though the impaired driving charge was withdrawn, Hunter pleaded guilty to careless driving and was fined $750.

Gagner, who is also the father of former Knight sensation and up-and-coming Edmonton Oiler rookie Sam Gagner, was released from custody, police said, and is scheduled to appear in court on April 23.

Gagner, who was a first-round NHL draft pick in 1983, played 946 games in the NHL for six different teams including the New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars, Dallas Stars, Calgary Flames, Florida Panthers and the Vancouver Canucks.
